So... trying to pick through it... (pathetically partial answer)
"A mode of transportation in the past": might be sail? "Versailles" seems like a plausible option for the palace in question, if it's a real-life palace rather than a fictional one, and "sail" fits right in there.
..
"The mode of transportation in the present": This one is a little odd, because it speaks to a singular, but there are many forms of transportation. However, if we take "mode" in it's mathematical definition (as in mean/median/mode) rather than just "form of", it's talking about the single most common means of transportation. Worldwide, that's the automobile, by a fair margin. I'd go with "car" here, for the moment, because it's short, and easy to add to things
..
"Active only on weekdays" - Workweek? Rush hour?
Beyond that, we have two fiction novels (but no more) that think of a given place as important, one of which has had a movie made about it. It's probably a fictional location as well, and not one out of common myth or folktale. Otherwise there's very little guarantee that it would be down to only two. Sadly, my grasp of movies (novel tie-in or otherwise) is not so hot.

(... so how does this contribute toward a solution? As this stands, it's Not an Answer, not even a partial one. Having fragmentary thoughts on aspects of a puzzle might be comment-worthy, but you probably want at least a germ of an idea that seems to lead forward before you should post as even a partial answer.)
